I bought this book years ago when I was a newly made Master Mason, and after reading thought it was a nice book. Recently, I was asked to be part of the Education Committee for our Valley, so I picked this book up again, and was blown away by the difference a few years makes when reading this book.If you are a Master Mason, and have not yet read this book, or have been a Master Mason, get this book, and read it. It is 90 pages long, but take your time to understand what is in t his book. It is a treasure trove of knowledge for the Master Mason. I cannot recommend this book enough, and hope that you get from this book, what I have.

This book was written to help the new Mason understand what Masonic symbolism means and to assist the Mason in his growth in Freemasonry by discussing things that may seem foreign or go unexplained within the lodge. Allen begins with an explanation of pictures and symbolism at large and how we have used symbolism through the ages to help to explain larger concepts. He asserts that it is symbolism that sets Freemasonry apart from other fraternities and accounts for its appeal.From this point the book moves into an examination of the symbols that are used in the Entered Apprentice degree such as the cable tow, hoodwink and slipper and later discusses the meaning of circumambulation, relief and truth; leading up to the more important lessons in fellowship, overcoming obstacles, obedience and commitment. And lastly how everything is designed around truth, wisdom, charity, temperance and prudence.Allen moves through the symbols that we may see in the Lodge and discusses their Masonic significance; the altar, the great and lesser lights, working tools and decor of the lodge and onward through the symbols of the second and third degrees of Freemasonry explaining how these represent the various stages of life.We further hear of the principle parts of the first temple, see the symbols related to it and hear of how they relate to our journey in Freemasonry.Lastly, we learn the Hiram story and about the use of a sprig of Acacia.The book explains many of the ancient symbols that we don't see used in Blue Lodge today but still maintain their Masonic significance and culminates with an understanding of brotherly love that binds our fraternity for all time.Although this book appears to be but a thin volume, do not underestimate the wealth of information that is packed into it. "The Craft and its Symbols" explains all of the images, symbols and rites that you'll encounter in the lodge or on the Internet and how they relate to our journey as Freemasons.

I became a Mason while overseas and had a hard time finding a lodge when I came home. Due to this I had a couple of years where I didnâ€™t study at all. This book helped me jump back into things, and brush up on my symbols and meanings. I think this book would be a fantastic gift for a newly raised Master Mason. It arrived earlier than expected and the cover is beautiful.

Very good book. Don't let the size of the book fool you, even though it's short, it's packed with further light in masonry. This is a great book for a new master mason. Very easy read as well. I will have to look further into this aurthors work. I will end up reading this book more then once.

Terrifically informative and detailed. Crams much more insight than you would think possible in so thin a volume. Like cliffs notes for Duncan's Ritual but no secrets, grips, etc. Very glad I added it to my growing Masonic library.

As a new Master Mason this book provided me with information that I missed during my initiation, passing and raising to becoming a Master Mason. Not always the easiest of reads, the messages were clearly conveyed and provoked lots of thinking on my part. This book should be a mandatory read for all new brothers.

My purchase of this book was to help understand the many esoteric symbols that make up Freemasonry, and it does a fine job.

This is a must have and a great gift to give. A brother receiving this will be forever thankful. I ordered from Macoy Publishing & Masonic Supply Co. The book was mint. No bent corners, no scratches.

About the Author

Arnold Robbins, an Atlanta native, is a professional programmer and technical author. He has worked with Unix systems since 1980, when he was introduced to a PDP-11 running a version of Sixth Edition Unix. He has been a heavy AWK user since 1987, when he became involved with gawk, the GNU project's version of AWK. As a member of the POSIX 1003.2 balloting group, he helped shape the POSIX standard for AWK. He is currently the maintainer of gawk and its documentation. He is also coauthor of the sixth edition of O'Reilly's Learning the vi Editor. Since late 1997, he and his family have been living happily in Israel.

I feel cheated by buying this book. And who cares? It cost less than $9. BUT I have four other O Reilly Pocket Reference books and I concluded they are a great value especially since they are all priced around $8-11 each. All of them over 100 pages long and some close to 200 pages and packed full of very concise, organized information. For something around $10 per pocket reference and the amount of content per book - I concluded they are a GREAT value. THAT IS until I bought this "Sed and Awk: Pocket Reference" . I have developed the feeling that it can be faster to just grab a pocket reference and look it up - much like using a dictionary. Especially if you don't remember the exact command - thumbing thru one of these pocket references can be faster and more efficient then a web search. It can save time sorting thru a Google search or have pops up harassing you to join a forum. But you need some info in your pocket reference and since this thing is a total length of 46 pages there is not much here. And the Awk coverage begins on page 18 - so you get (46-18) or 28 pages of Awk. And after the 'regex' boiler plate info in the beginning of this book - about a dozen pages of Sed info. Since I have used Awk intensely on occasion - I feel there is a lot more to Awk then 28 pages. But I don't use Awk frequently enough to master it - so I really wanted a quick Awk and Sed reference. And this book is not that.It is strange since I have Arnold Robbins Bash Pocket Reference and it is not bad at over 100 pages and I find it organized and useful. I use it for the occasional shell script. But I think Robbins is taking advantage of the good reputation of these other pocket references. I think it is important to note that he has written a 456 page "Effective Awk Programming" book for around $40 on Amazon. It is almost like Robbins is saying - "you want some reference on Awk? - then buy my $40 book otherwise here is a teaser book with a few pages on Sed and Awk". It seems very little effort was exerted in writing this "Sed and Awk" Pocket Reference. Since I was so happy with my other pocket references - I had high expectations and did not bother to read the product description that this 'book' is less than 50 pages. It is about 1/8 inch or 4mm thick - it is more like a pamphlet. So, I can't recommend this book.

This is a nifty little reference book that I'm using now that I've brew installed like the real versions of these commands. I know there's a man page and what have you, but my eyes feel like they're going to bleed after a long day... it's nice to save them hell, and actually dog ear/underline the useful bits for things I use a bunch.Besides, it's not a bad idea to indicate to the people around you that you grok the command line or are at least trying to learn. If older folks run the shop, you get street cred or a pat on the head. If younger folks do... they might ask you over to their desk to help with a personal program they'd never be able to hack together, despite being like python ninjas or whatever.

Awk though is a command that most Linux admins overlook, misuse, or just use poorly. This pocket reference may not do a lot to change that, but it will help when you when you can't remember exactly what a switch or option does. And while much of what is in this book can be found online too, sometimes it is still easier to just pick up a book than try to find that one bookmark or google for the right term. It's adequate for this purpose, however, I wish I would have just gone right to buying "Effective Awk Programming" by O'Reilly, which I did a few weeks later, because I really was wanting something more in depth.

Normally, I ask Google for instructions in how to use the sed and awk commands. However, I once found myself without internet and I lost a whole day trying to figure out the right syntax of sed. With this book in my backpak this will never happen again.If you need a complete description of the commands, with examples and explanations, please consider buying the "non pocket" version, since this is only a fast reference, much like having a "man sed" in your pocket (it really is *tiny*).

This is an essential, can't-live-without-it reference for any Linux professional or serious hobbyist. It's also a soup-to-nuts technical manual.I didn't know I could do what I now do every day using sed, and I haven't even started on awk yet.If you use Linux for any kind of list or input processing, you need this book. Trust me.

I have hard copies of this book but thought the kindle version would be a handy solution to the prob of having to not need the book often but when I do... and it has been.

While Google and manpages are great, there's no replacement for reference guides like these and the aforementioned are not exactly "readily available" when you're sitting in a datacenter with a downed non-virtual server. If you are a Linux/FreeBSD/AIX/MacOSX Admin and want an edge on really making life easier for yourself, then you need to be able to have a good series of references to do such. You cannot know everything after all and every little bit of code snippet or reference set helps tremendously.Sed & Awk Pocket Reference is just one of those necessities that one should have for such a job as it really will help you become proficient and may even help you get out of a situation a bit faster. I have gone through 2 of these references personally and use it for everything from troubleshooting to automated cronjobs. My only complaint with this 2nd Edition is that it doesn't have as many examples as I'd like, requiring one to fiddle around with switch & option syntax a few times to get right. Otherwise, it's a gem in doing my job. Get it!

My kids know more awk & sed; no practice examples of how to use them. Pure corporate cash grab. This "pocket reference" is an insult to humanity. Obviously I didn't review the book before purchasing.
