Lehtolainen's latest Maria Kallio mystery novel, is a well intended effort to portray the various challenges inherent in Finland's immigration situation. I am a dedicated and appreciative reader of the Kallio series. However, "Where Have all the Young Girls Gone" was for me, too convoluted and unfocussed. The author addressed difficult challenges in the Finnish immigrant community, but did so in a manner that demonized the males and displayed the females as essentially helpless.

This manages to be a compelling read despite rather than because of the plot. The plot looks straightforward: Maria has to investigate the disappearance of three Islamic immigrant girls, and then the murder of a fourth. Unfortunately, it wanders all over the place. Usually, this would make me stop reading, but in this instance the characters and the problems they face were so interesting that I stayed involved.

This latest installment of the Maria Kallio series is a nice fast paced read. The book had my attention throughout from beginning to end. Two problems with this story were the part with the officer from Afghanistan the faction that the various police investigations were a jumbled mess . I kept waiting for everything to come together and it never happened.

This book was excellent, as well as were the others. I thoroughly enjoy reading about the female detective and her cases.

Really hard to keep track of the characters. Don't really care to read about what she is eating. But will buy her next book.

Once I became adjusted to the impossible to pronounce names the book opened to an excellent story like a family.

What I like about this Maria Kallio series is that the characters are realistic, you can really picture their lives, it feels real. No super heroes, no magical solutions. It feels as if you are present in the story. Great book!

A good read spoiled by the need to keep up with a vast cast of difficult and complicated Finnish names.
